Important Retiree Dental Plan/Enrollment Changes

Your existing TRICARE Retiree Dental Plan (TRDP) expires on December 31st of this year and is being replaced by the Federal Employees Dental & Vision Insurance Program (FEDVIP), a decision made by Congress two years ago.  In October you will be able to begin viewing your options under FEDVIP and you MUST enroll in a plan between November 12th and December 10th. Failure to enroll will cause you to lose access to your benefit until the next annual open enrollment.   
 
 
 
 
AFRA to Join Congressional VSO Roundtables

This week AFRA was invited to join quarterly roundtable discussions hosted by Members of Congress and attended by representatives from military and veteran service organizations.  The talks take place in the capitol building in Washington, D.C. and give VSOs an opportunity to discuss veteran issues in an open forum with key congressional leaders.

NY Times Tweet Includes AFRA

On August 23rd, the New York Times tweeted a letter that AFRA endorsed as a member of the National Military and Veterans Alliance.  The letter is signed by AFRA's Executive Director, who is also a Co-Director of the Alliance.  The letter urges the Secretary of Defense and the Director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau to continue enforcement of the Military Lending Act.    
 
Chapter 61-Concurrent Receipt: Congressman wants to Hear from You

On August 20th AFRA met with staff in the office of Congressman Sanford Bishop, a long-time supporter of ending the concurrent receipt offset of military retirement and disability pay.  The Congressman has asked for testimonials from AFRA members who were medically retired from the military in order to illustrate to his colleagues how the offset has impacted your life and lives of your families.  If you would like to share your story, use the "contact us" form on the AFRA webpage to contact AFRA.
 
President Signs 2019 NDAA

This afternoon the President of the United States signed into law the $716 billion dollar defense bill for 2019.  Key for military retirees is the fact that the bill did not include Senate provisions that attempted to remove the "grandfathering" of certain TRICARE changes for current retirees that would have significantly increased costs.
 
President to Sign NDAA at Fort Drum

On Monday, August 13th, the President will sign the National Defense Authorization Act at Fort Drum, NY.  The massive bill, which provides funding for our military and many veteran and retiree benefits, was reconciled by House and Senate members in July and passed in both chambers earlier this month.  Upon being signed into law on Monday, the speed with which the bill advanced through the legislative process will break recent records.  The bill does not include efforts made by the Senate to raise TRICARE fees for military retirees in 2019.  
 
NDAA Passes Senate; Heads to President

On Friday the 2019 National Defense Authorization Act passed in the Senate and now awaits the President's signature to become law.  The bill does not include efforts made by the Senate to raise TRICARE fees for military retirees.  
 
Senators Support Blue Water Navy Act

At the Senate Veteran's Affairs Committee hearing today, senators overwhelmingly expressed their support for the Blue Water Navy Vietnam Veterans Act.  The act, which requires the VA recognize claims made by blue water navy veterans related to Agent Orange, has already passed in the House.  
 
Congress Rejects TRICARE Fee Increases for Retirees

A House-Senate conference committee tasked with ironing out differences in separate versions of the defense authorization bill has rejected Senate-passed provisions that would have sharply increased TRICARE fees, deductibles and co-pays for a million retirees under age 65. Read more...
 
NDAA Set to Pass in the Senate

THIS WEEK — THE SENATE IS SET TO PASS THE NDAA AND SEND IT TO THE PRESIDENT: The Senate is near a vote to advance the compromise version of the annual defense policy, paving the way for its final passage this week and sending the massive bill to President Donald Trump, who is expected to sign it.

 
 
SVAC Hearing on Blue Water Navy Vietnam Veterans Act

The Senate Veterans Affairs Committee will hold a hearing on the Blue Water Navy Vietnam Veterans Act of 2018 on August 1st.  The bill, which has already passed in the House, seeks to recognize Agent Orange related illnesses experienced by "blue water" navy veterans that served in Vietnam.  Passage will make such illnesses claimable through the VA.
